Is it worth it to craft?

I know gathering is good cuz it makes you money, but is any of the crafting really that good? I mean in WoW when I played, I remember how most of the recipes were useless cuz you could just run a dungeon or raid to get gear that was better and usually in way less time. Is that how it is in Rift as well? I haven't gotten past level 30, so I guess I just want to know if I should continue crafting, or just gather everything and sell it all on the ah?

    Thanks guys/girls!!

From what I've seen, the only viable endgame crafting professions are runecrafting and apothecary

The only professions that seem to have any long term usefulness are Weaponsmith/Artificer for weapon stones, alchemy for potions and runecrafter for enchants. Armorsmith and outfitting are generally useful for fueling your runecrafter habits, but like WoW, the actual usefulness of the gear is shortly lived. If you don't use a lot of consumables, it's probably more worthwhile to just gather and sell.

i think as far as making money there are some recipes that you'll get from the T1 and T2 dungeons that you'll make some decent money off of.

as far as usefulness of gear i personally was wep/rune and i used both of my professions non stop while lvling to 50, post 50 i make myself runes all the time as well as for my guild mates, but i dont find myself making weapons for people as much, but it does happen.

the thing is, you have to grind to get plaques to purchase the good recipes, so its time consuming so there is a big gap in between when you hit 50 and when you actually have some decent recipes for a lvl 50.

I will say in our guild we have a ton of people that have professions that are pretty tricked out and we can get a person completely geared out from the min. they hit 50, for T2's, which gives them a big jump on the ammt of time it will take them to get into raiding with us, so it all depends on where you plan on ended up in end game and what you want to do: make money or help your guildies.

    Yes

I have been following Stockpile's crafting blog with avid interest. Stockpile is out to make money by crafting. He buys materials from the AH, and crafts stuff for profit. Typical markups are 20% over materials cost.

He has managed to make quite a bit of platinum doing this in Rift, and detailed a list of what recipes on his shard were profitable. The only profession that was not profitable was Apothecary. He could find no item for which he could profit on his shard in that profession.

One problem seems to be that people are dumping crafted items below material costs on the AH. Perhaps they are grinding up their skills and dumping results.

A big money maker area was in quest related items such as the runecrafter daily runes that people commonly turn in. Seems to me I am always running dry on perpetual flares when I grind up stuff, and most of the daily quest runes that require those will cost.

One strange thing he noted is it seemed to him he was the only one out there crafting and trying to make money, except for a couple other competitors.

I'm an Armorsmith and Runecrafter and I sell my wares consistently on the AH. To date, I have over 2,000p in the bank and I have easily spent another 2k on various things. I dunno but that seems pretty worthwhile to me.

Depends how you go about it and what your goals are. If you want to craft so you can make platinum you should know that other than a Outfitter/Runecrafter combo I don't recommend it. Go with Outfitter/Runecrafting or go with harvesting skills (i.e. mining, foraging, and butchering).

It's my pleasure to get an opportunity to discuss in this reputed forum. I love seeing people thrive online. It's such a great opportunity I have today.
