Mages are specialists in long-ranged combat and area of effect attacks that can bring death to any single enemy or group of enemies.

While a knowledgeable mage could potentially be very deadly while in melee range, it is no doubt that a mage is most deadly when keeping their target at the mage’s maximum casting range. A mage would prefer to keep their enemies at range, due to the mage’s lack of armor and health.

Mage’s can become very powerful if played correctly and the right combinations of Souls are taken. With time and experience, you will be able to master the Mage calling; but before you get there, you will need to know some basic info on the Mage calling and all it’s different Souls.

The Mage has access to 9 different Souls, wherein each one gives the Mage different and unique abilities that will benefit him or her in their endeavors throughout the mysterious lands of Telara. Each soul is unique enough in their respective ways as to help the mage or the mage’s group in ways that no other Calling or Soul in Rift could.

The Soul system in Rift is open-ended enough that it allows for the Player to either choose to master one specific soul of their liking and gain some small benefits from two other souls, or mix and match between 2 or 3 souls and gain significant benefits from all the souls that were chosen. Due to this, it is very important to know and understand what each of the 9 Souls under the Mage Calling is capable of.

Basics to Playing a Mage:

It’s important to know and understand how to play a Mage before heading out into the treacherous world of Telara with your newly created Mage.

First thing you should know is that to be able to cast any spells, a Mage requires the use of Mana.

It is represented as a Blue Bar in the player portrait, right underneath the green-colored health bar.

There are also special abilities a Mage can get that can only be performed by gaining Charge.

Almost every offensive or healing spell that’s cast by the Mage will generate a certain amount of Charge. Once Charge is generated, you can use these special abilities.

Every Mage can only store 100 Charge; anything more than that will be wasted. It is usually recommended to generate 100 Charge first before using any of your Charge abilities.

One general rule of thumb that everyone must remember while playing Rift, is that Survivability is the most important skill you could learn while playing a Mage (or any other Calling for that matter). A dead Mage does no DPS. You must always be wary or your surroundings and pay attention to everything that’s happening around you. This will ensure success when you’re on your own, doing PvP or grouping with friends.

If you can manage to keep yourself alive, it’s just a matter of casting the right combination of spells, according to your selection of Souls, and using your Charge intelligently. If you can manage this, you will become sought-after by your community and a force to be reckoned with by your enemies.

Mage Stats:

While roaming alone or in a group of friends, it’s important to know how stats work specifically for a Mage. By knowing these, you will know what kind of Armor and Weapons to get and what not to take. It is important, because you wouldn’t want to take something that a Warrior, Rogue or Cleric will get more benefit out of when roaming around Telara in a group.

Focus is very important to a mage, because without it, when running Tier 1 Experts, Tier 2 Experts and Raid content in Rift, you’ll have your spells resisted a lot. A resisted spell lowers your performance and your contribution when doing that content. Thus, you must reach the Focus cap for each Tier of Content if you wish to contribute to the top of your ability.

The caps for each Tier are:

With the above Charts, we can easily determine that after you achieve the cap of Focus, a Mage’s most important Stat is and will always be Intelligence; with Wisdom coming into 2nd place and Endurance coming into 3rd. No matter what Soul Combination you’re using as a Mage, Intelligence will always be the top priority when choosing gear.
